Advice for those of us from the hated state of California?

Hi, my wife and I live in Sacramento. As you may have read, houses here are at 300k...to live pretty much in the hood. I see all these incredible houses in Spokane for 75 to 150k and I think, "Looks like a beautiful city, is it liveable?" Are there many jobs? I am assuming y'all get a good deal of snow, which would be strange, but not a deal breaker. We are offbeat people with an appreciation for Ghost World, Elvis Costello, and David Lynch, so a reactionary crowd wouldn't be a good thing. I am just looking to get input on what sort of a town Spokane is. Thanks...

  • you better get a job befor you think of moving to spokane, the houses are cheep because the economy is really bad and unemployment is really high,
now if you wand a good economy cross over to the Idaho side its only 30 miles over to Coeur d'Alene and the job growth is booming as well as construction. There are even two high rise condos in the works both over 18 floors. Its worth the drive for the homes sales are a bit higher but taxes and gas prices are a lot lower.

    good luck

I beg to differ on Coeur De Wayne. North Idaho has an economy because the Haggedon's own it. It is essentially a retail/tourist trap. The second sky scraper, if 18 stories can be called that will be a hotel.

Minimum wage in Spokane beats minimum wage in Idaho any day! Especially since you have to drive to Spokane for anything interesting anyway. And at $3 + a gallon, there really aren't any savings. As for jobs, mostly any REAL job would be found in Spokane. However there are some great bellman jobs at the resort in Idaho. But people tip for shit in the Boondocks.

On the other hand, if you're buying a vacation home, well then hell yes, buy in Idaho. But then you could afford the gas. And think of how much money you'll also save tipping for shit.

Good luck and pack the parka!
      • dude where have you been?
lots of shopping on the idaho side, name things that spokane has that north idaho has not.
also the two new highrises going in are both condos, not hotels and neather of them are owned by Haggedon all he has is a resort downtown. please inform me of all you say he owns?

i wanted to be nice but come on Spokane is an old dumpy town, that has not been growing sence the 80s.

even Boise now has a larger population than Spokane and has pushed it out of its # 3 spot as most populous city in the North west.
Also Spokane has laid off 20% of there police and fire departments due to lack of tax base.
I was simply letting the guy know there is no jobs there.

if he wants a nice growing City with jobs and no snow i would say look into Boise.

Alright you challenged me so here goes.

          1) Manito Park
          2) Riverfront Park (and the carousel)
          3) Nordstroms
          4) Krispey Kreme
          5) Peaceful Valley & Browns Edition
          6) Business non-condo or resort related high-rises
          7) A symphony
          8) Actual four-year colleges
          9) Huckleberries (the store and not the berry)
          10) Dempsey's

I stopped at 10 because I could have gone on for a while. The problem with Coeur de Wayne is it is well owned by Hageddon. It's like living in a big suberb. City people need city things and to get those things you have to drive to the city if you live in the boonies -- which I consider anything in N. Idaho to be.

Spokane is a great place (if you can find work - you're right on that count). But that's why it's cheap. Move here to build something, and screw opportunism.

You failed to mention Bloomsday, and Hoopfest, and the Spokane River and falls in the downtown area, with Centenial Trail, as well as Mt Spokane in the not too far distance... Then there is all the wonderful people, you just have to open up to all the possibilities! And what about the historic site of the 1974 (?) World's Fair, and the future of the Kendall Yard development? This place exudes history AND a future. I don't know if C'Alene has an REI, but Spokane DOES! And, four seasons are a great attraction to a lot of us...
  • Hi Izaak,

I grew up in Spokane and moved to San Francisco when I was 19 because there just weren't many opportunities there. Sure, I can't afford to buy house here in California 10 years later, but there aren't many tech jobs in Spokane either. The largest employer there is healthcare.

And expect a hefty decrease in your salary--as in making 30K is doing okay.

On the upside, it is a good place to raise kids I think. Lots of family activities, outdoor stuff. Culturally it is pretty blah. When I lived there it was 97% caucasian and the largest ethnic minority population were native americans.

But yeah, if you find a decent paying job, you can have a fairly decent standard of living.

Yes--four distinct seasons too...or at least it used to be. Seems like the winters are getting warmer and less snowy, but it used to snow, autumn colors, everything blooms in the spring and a hot dry summer. Skiing nearby as well as lots of lakes, rivers and streams.

    :-)

    Best of luck to you!
    • Thanks everyone, appreciate the advice...
      • Izaak, I'm from Sacramento too. I'm not sure that Spokane is the place - I've been here for more than six years and can't seem to get a foothold.

A lot depends upon your political color. Sure, Seattle is blue, but Spokane is more Idaho than Wasington. It's as red as red gets. Sure, there is an arts community - but you can fit this community into a thimble. Not to dog the arts community here, it's just that for a city that has co-opted its population into something like 250,000 (keep in mind that Spokane's population in 1974 was 200, 000.) has gone absolutely NOWHERE, I'd think twice about Spokane. If you move here, *think* Sacramento in 1965.

On the up side, a small place is a good place to start a family. I can't seem to get on here becasue I'm a female that is 50 years old. But, you're male. This might make a difference. And, the opportunities are there if you *look* right.

Izaak, this really is a strange place. It's worse than Sacramento in 1965 - and, I was there at that time! If you want to hit an undisturbed, nature-perfect place in WA state, I'd go for someplace in Klikkitas County. At least there, with nothing obstructing your view, you can see trouble coming.
  • well im not a native, but ive been here since 1996. i moved here from portland, so i hated spokane the moment i arrived. i can say that it has improved over the past 10 years, albeit slowly. the workforce is more centered around blue-collar type jobs, but the good news is we have the highest minimum wage in the country. sales tax is 8.1% and there is no state taxes. washington state has one of the best state assistance programs, in case you needed to know.

when i moved here, spokane seemed to be overrun with drug addicts, rednecks, bible thumpers and prostitutes. quite the combo. since then, we still have our druggies and although the city is fairly rundown in some areas, the city has taken some steps to start rebuilding the beauty that once was here. the davenport hotel has been remodeled and they recently built a huge adjacent hotel with available high priced condos, that surprisingly getting bought by californians. we get a lot of freelance programmers from california moving here due to the cheap cost of living.

the downtown area is beginng to be more appealing...although the crime is still there. we have nicer buildings, more contemporary cafes and establishments and somewhat of a nightlife. south hill and brownes addition have become historical districts and highly popular for living.

spokane has begun to receive some national recognition as well, with having several movies filmed here, most recently "Mozart and the Whale" and hosting the 2007 Winter Olympic Figure Skating. of course, i have to mention, that spokane has appeared on C.O.P.S. more than once. LOL

whatever you choose, good luck... if you can work from home- i say come on up and check it out... if you dont mind landing a job in a call center, gas station, fast food joint/diner or hotel work- then we have those too.... heh. if youre skilled, youre promised a job in the medical field for sure...we have a lot of hospitals in this little town.

    • It's funny how the label "Californian" is thrown around. I got that label because I lived in the San Francisco area before moving here, even though I grew up in Seattle. California has become a sort of extension of college - go there to make a bunch of money, get some great experience, then get tired of it and move out. 7 years was enough for me.

I kind of like it here in the Valley. I'm amazed how many new houses and condos are going up - I'm not really sure who's buying them. I'm happy with my small old house, which I never would have been able to afford in California, and probably not in Seattle either.
